Art of the American West
Howdy Partner! It's time to round ‘em up, head ‘em out and mosey on down to the PSAC Studio, 450 Lewis Street (on the third floor).
Western Artists come from many walks of life and approximately 15 talented artists will be showing an amazing variety of work that encompasses original paintings, sculpture, Giclées, tile, felting, fabric art, jewelry and collage. The Art of the American West exhibit will open to the public with an artist’s reception on Thursday, September 9 from 5-7 p.m. We may not have a campfire, but gather around the hors d'oeuvres table and shoot the breeze with kindred folk. Artwork as unique as the west itself will be on display.

Soft Art: Decorative and Wearable
The newest exhibit presented by the Pagosa Springs Arts Council opens tonight with an artist’s reception from 5-7 p.m. at 450 Lewis St. in the third floor Studio. The collective work shown is by local artists: Diane Davis, Annie Jacobi and Carol Schneider and regional artist: Lois Burbach.
Lois is an award winning felter and highly-regarded fiber artist. She has taught felting at the Pagosa Fiber Festival, The Wool Festival of the Southwest, for the Alpaca Breeders of the Rockies and at various alpaca ranches and yarn shops throughout Colorado and New Mexico. She and her husband, Jim started Navajo Lake Alpacas in 2002 on their “retirement ranch” near Durango.

The Soft Art exhibit is showing at 450 Lewis St. in the Studio on third floor and may be viewed Tuesday through Thursday from 12-5. For more information please call PSAC at 970-264-5020.

PSAC Soft art exhibit
soft art exhibit Diane Davis has an academic background and show experience in metal smithing and weaving from years ago.  She excitedly found the world of felting during the past couple of years and her current focus has been on exploring wet and dry (needle) felting techniques to create colorful, 2- and 3-dimensional objects.  She has had award winning work in the 2009 and 2010 PSAC Regional Art Competition shows, in the 2009 and 2010 Fiber Fest competition, and in the 2010 Artisans of the Southwest Community Show.

For Carol Schneider, inspiration for her jewelry is everywhere she looks. “Working with unusual materials in my jewelry has unleashed my creativity and challenged my design skills,” says Schneider. Carol’s beaded jewelry incorporates a variety of techniques, including her favored peyote stitch beading. Her work also reflects her love of the West and honoring the Anasazi culture. Two of Carol’s necklaces were accepted into the Four Corners Commission Juried Exhibit in Durango. Each unique piece that Carol creates is truly one of a kind.

Annie Jacobi loves making sterling silver fabricated pieces of her own design. She concentrates on jewelry making using semi-precious stones and beads and unusual findings. “My strength in my work has been the visual impact and the colors, whether in interior design, clothing construction, quilting, knitting, felting, beading, etc.”  Annie never makes the same piece twice - all of her work is one of a kind in every sense.  Annie loves to add sterling silver shapes and hand worked elements, which combines the two skills and makes the piece more interesting and allows her to stay involved with silver work.

Randy Albers, a self-taught artist and Pagosa resident has been painting in oils for more than 25 years. She and her husband have lived in Pagosa for ten and a half years and all over the U.S. and Canada. Her paintings for this exhibit are based on horses from nearby Pagosa ranches. Internationally renowned artist Pierre Mion will be exhibiting his newest watercolor painting, “Cathedral Valley.” Sculptor David Burch, moved here from California last fall, and is showing his wonderful three-dimensional contemporary horses.  We are also honored to have oil on canvas paintings by Rachel Weissberger, a California artist whose work has shown in Paris, France, Beijing, China and Seoul, Korea. Gillian Wallace, Chama, NM, is an impressionistic oil painter. She has studied with a variety of California painters including Chester Arnold and Kathy Mason Lerner as well as David Leffel in New Mexico. Gillian will be exhibiting at La Luz Studio during the Chama Valley Studio Tour and Arts Festival, September 4-5, 2010.

We have additional artists that will be added to this star studded list so please attend the opening reception and meet and mingle with your other horse lovers. The exhibit will be held at 450 Lewis St. in the Studio on third floor. For more information call PSAC at 970-264-5020.

The 7th Annual Juried Exhibition: A Regional Art Competition
Fourteen Artists to Exhibit
The 7th Annual Juried Exhibition: A Regional Art Competition, sponsored by the Pagosa Springs Arts Council, will open Thursday, June 17, 2010. Fourteen artists and a multiplicity of media will be on display. The watercolors of Pierre Mion, Catherine Wagner and Jean Smith vary in theme. Bronze sculptures by Donna Merchant-Crooks and Jai Klarl give pause for thought. Merchant-Crooks works in oil as well as Jeanine Malaney and Virginia Barlett.

In addition, there are three soft media artists. Jeanine Malaney’s fabric collage “Hay Bales,” batik pieces by Denise Chaney and a relief of felted merino and alpaca fiber by Diane Davis appeal to everyone’s kinesthetic sense. A mixed media relief by Davis is another entry and includes felted wool fiber.

Saguaro Shadows by S. Wagner

Butterfly by D. Chaney

The three dimensional artistry of Linda Hogan includes acrylic on wood and an oil on clay “Green Sea Turtle.” Kiln formed glass is the medium of choice for Stephanie Lochbaum, presenting “Allure of the Aspen.” Sandy Applegate and Amy Winter of Denver both paint with acrylics, but exhibit very different styles and themes. One artist, Lorraine Trenholm of Ignacio, has a pastel in the show.

Whatever your taste in art, the 7th Annual Juried Art Exhibit has something to appeal to your sensibility. All art work will be on display at The Studio on 450 Lewis St., third floor June 17 through July 13. Please join us! For more information contact the Pagosa Springs Arts Council 970-264-5020 or info@pagosa-arts.com.

The Craziest of Quilts
By Ann Shurtleff

My crazy quilts have progressed gradually. I used to paint on silk and make all kinds of clothing, but as my vision grew gradually worse and arthritis in my hands progressed I could no longer paint the silk. I was just sitting in my workshop one day gazing at all the piles of fabric and thinking that my kids will have a few choice things to say about me when I am gone having to clear up my mess. Cats were happily sleeping in piles of silk and dust was starting to accumulate and generally getting around the area was more than a challenge. I had a eureka moment. Why not make quilts? I knew that I would never be a proper quilter making exquisite quilts that had every corner in the right place as I’m not tuned to be exact, I sort of free flow.
My rules were, to purchase nothing but to use up what I had available and if I later on had to purchase then it would be due to necessity not desire for a pretty fabric. I cut squares out of plain cotton and started. I had no plans at all as to any finished product. Some I hand embroidered and some I machine embroidered adding embellishments as I went along. I gradually ended up with another pile of stuff….oops now I have to do something more with this “stuff”. OK. One quilt coming up. This did not prove to be a simple task as nothing quite fit, but I decided that crazy was the quilt and crazy it would be. I slowly progressed and made my first crazy quilt and liked it. There was no holding me back now. I still let the quilt grow on its own without a master plan. No pre-conceived idea as to the end result. I enjoyed doing this and made more quilts but the piles never seemed to diminish in size although I did tidy up and sorted colors etc. I also made some cotton quilts (all crazy) but I much prefer working with silk.

Later I thought about becoming a “real quilter” because just how hard could it be? I have made ball gowns, wedding gowns and all sorts of complicated items. I’m afraid that I really got my “comeuppance” for it was the hardest thing I have ever done and I now look at real quilts with a totally different appreciation for the precise amount of work that goes into the product. I will occasionally try again but only to see if, in a false hope, that I could make a quilt.

I did have to break my rule about purchasing and have bought batting, thread and some backing fabric. I have used old sheets and strange fabrics that I happened to have for the backings. I feel that the origin of quilts sprung from a desire to use up left over fabrics that would occur prior to the ability to purchase off the rack. My close vision is getting very poor so the bright colors and the randomness of crazy quilting are just right for me and I have enough fabric to last for the rest of my life. I hope that you will enjoy looking at the quilts.
