ARTIST PROFILE - RANDALL DAVIS – LIVING
ADVENTURE
 |
Somewhere near timberline in the mighty San Juan Mountains of southwest
Colorado, Randall Davis rides on horseback to spectacular vistas of the
Continental Divide and beyond. This rugged outdoorsman was lucky enough
to spend summers in Colorado from age fourteen, living adventure and
integrating with the wilderness that surrounded him.
After dental school it was an easy choice to settle in the small town of
Pagosa Springs, and hang his shingle as the only dentist in this ‘one
horse’ town. He settled into the family ranch and provided a wonderful
rural childhood for his three children; serving twenty-four years on the
school board, he contributed much to this small community. Life in Pagosa
demanded creative professionalism, as ranchers and rural residents could
little afford dental fees. Randall had a special touch and in caring for
his patients he often accepted trade ranging from Native American weavings,
to a horse, farm produce or collectibles that still decorate his home today. |
One such trade came from the great outdoorsman and artist, Sid Mountain.
During his elder years Sid taught Randall painting, for crowns and bridges,
igniting love of an art form for which Randall had much natural talent.
Over subsequent years he studied with Ted Goerschner, David Leffel, Scott
Christensen, Huihan Liu, Tom Lockhart and Robert Moore. Perhaps dentistry
gave Randall his sense of detail or keen skills refined through time in
the wilderness. At any rate his pack-horse, slipping to its demise on a
steep mountain trail, inspired the first touching bronze, “Time to
Let Go.” Others have followed and, though these works take months
to complete, the forms seem to emerge for him out of thin air, manifesting
with unusually intricate and exquisite detail. |

Randall Davis is a true renaissance man, blessed with extraordinary
talent, vision and heart. His many forms of creative expression reflect
a love for the wild beauty that surrounds his chosen life. When a tragic
airplane crash took the lives of his parents and only brother it impacted
him traumatically with the realization of how fragile life can be and
impelled him to begin doing what he loved, instead of waiting until “retirement.” Thus
began Randall’s journey with artful expression that includes
drawing, painting, music and sculpture. He also enjoys welding and
woodworking, restoring old vehicles and saving historical buildings.
A legend in local bluegrass circles, Randall is also proficient on
guitar and banjo. He discovered this traditional music during high
school and formed a band that opened for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
in California, at the Glendale Ice House. He has played with a number
of bluegrass artisans over the years, and produced award-winning recordings.
His son is talented in his own right on mandolin and guitar and father
and son can be found playing with other band members at gatherings
and festivals around the Four Corners region.
In 1996 Randall ultimately gave up dentistry (to the great dismay of his patients),
to focus full time on his many forms of artistic expression. Shown in a number
of galleries, his paintings and sculptures continue to be drawn from days and
nights spent in the wilderness, transmitting his sense of the sacredness of
wild beauty and a reverence for life itself. Randall Davis is not one to sit
still; he is always actively involved in a life resplendent with inspiration
for his art. His hope is that his work will inspire others with a sense of
transformative delight in the beauty and soul of life.
