ARTIST PROFILE - Linda K. Bennett

Linda was born in Chicago in the 1950s. She has been fortunate to live on the
east and west coast and Canada. Her life has been grounded in art and music
since childhood. After high school she studied art, music, and theatre. Next
she studied and graduated from the Calligraphy Center in San Francisco. As a
result, Linda went into graphic design. She then studied graphic design and
oil painting for two years at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. From there,
Linda was hired in the marketing department at the San Francisco Opera
House. Linda participated in the planning, design, and art direction of
collateral materials.

A wonderful marriage moved Linda to New Mexico where she opened Bennett
Design, a marketing and advertising agency. She took some time off and
finished a degree in business and economics at The Anderson’s School of
Business at UNM. Her next opportunity was Marketing Director for a young
and aggressive bank busy buying banks in New Mexico.

Currently, she is retired with her husband in Pagosa Springs. Here Linda
works on her fabric art, quilting, painting, costume and set design.

Artist Statement:

It’s all about a composite of elements: texture, layering, and touchy feely
materials. The materials I use are fabrics from all over the world, paints,
threads and yarns, pencils, plastics, and found junk. I layer these while free
motion embroidering, quilting, painting, drawing, and lettering. If it makes
me want to sit on the floor and play, I want to use it.

Ilove it when a composition draws you into it to see that many things are
going on at once. There is the first viewing of a piece as a whole and then the
thought that there is something more going on and it requires a step closer and
closer to begin to see the story in each piece.

It is never easy to put your art “out there” and be judged. Part of my soul is on
the canvas. When the canvas rings true for me, it is ready to go into the world.
